Flossing is good, brushing is great, but how can you make your oral hygiene regimen even better? By using a pre-rinse to break up plaque before you brush! Anti-plaque pre-rinses can be used in conjunction with brushing and flossing, but is not meant to replace either. Please keep in mind that children under 6 should not use a rinse or mouth wash due to the risk of ingestion.
There are two types of mouth rinses. The first is Cosmetic, which temporarily masks bad breath and has a good flavor, but does not kill bacteria associated with bad breath. Theraputic, on the other hand, has active ingredients intended to help control or reduce conditions like bad breath, gingivitis, plaque, and tooth decay.
Rinses can also serve other purposes. When carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide are included among the active ingredients, the pre-rinse is also intended to whiten the teeth. Some that include topical local anesthetics such as lidocaine can offer pain relief. Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay, and antimicrobial ingredients like cetylpyridinium, chlorhexidine, and essential oils have been shown to reduce plaque and gingivitis when combined with daily brushing and flossing.
You can select your pre-rinse based on your specific needs and desires. Once you have, you will want to add it to your daily routine for optimal results.
